Now the entire work flow in the broadcast industry is on the file based system so it is needed that they should be transferred on the digital systems so that professional data can be managed. It is the time when it’s needed that existing stuff must be turned to the digital form. All new work would be managed under some separate workstations. For this purpose more systems are required and with them increased number of KVM are also required. Here KVM stands for keyboard, video and mouse. With the increase in the number of KVM devices the cost and power consumption would also increase. To help all form this problem KVM technology has been developed about which we are going to talk in detail below.
What is KMV? KVM is the most effective step in today’s world for open source virtualization technology. This is piece of hardware which is enabling the users to extend and control the keyboard, video and mouse signals. The switches that we use in the KVM technology enable the user to access and control a computer. These switches use to be connected with keyboard, video and mouse ports to control them. Now days KVM switches, extend and then transmit different type of signals transparently like different video types, bidirectional audio, RS-232 and USB.
Categories of KVM hardware: There are three main categories in which KVM hardware has been divided. This hardware’s have improved the working environment of users and computers as well. These three include KVM extenders, KVM switches and KVM matrix switches.
KVM Extenders: they use to operate separate computers and users. There is always some limit of the cable length with devices which cause many problems sometime when the distance between the user and computer is long. To overcome these issues these KVM extenders were introduced. These extenders use to amplify the signals of the KVM devices so that over long distance they can work properly. The distance that one extender can cover range from 10m and 10,000m depending on the KVM device in use. All the external interfaces use to be connected with KVM transmitters which are the local ports. Then from the remote user location user can connect hardware with the receiver easily by plug and play technique. The transmitter and receiver can be linked over infrastructural cables.
KVM Switches: these switches use to operate multiple computers and platforms with only one keyboard, video and mouse. This is also called a stand alone device which allows the users to access batch of computers even with different platforms through single KVM set. KVM switches access between two to eight computers, cascaded up to 256. In the standard KVM technology these switches use to be connected with external computers only and the switching between computers is done with some other external device.
Analog KVM Technology: Analog KVM technology is used when the user and system exist in the same location. It is also preferred for accessing centralized multi-PC and rack servers. This technology use to work independently. This means that there is no need to install additional software and network operating system to work on this technology. And at the same time the user can actually access all computers easily.
KVM over IP Technology: under IP technology KVM devices use digital system to move the data over IP’s and is always compatible of working in heterogeneous environment of hardware’s. Many users think it ideal for multi location data centers and branch office.
Benefits of KVM Technology: the biggest advantage that can be considered today is the common features of different KVM products. These devices are very easy to install and operate. No need of professional guidance to work with this technology. Individuals can easily assemble the extenders and can save the cost of technical expert. With this KVM technology help with extensive user rights, network access, authentication, preventive monitoring, and event reporting that improve both operation and safety yet still comply with any internal IT policies.
