Introduction: Disk Defragment which is also known as Disk Defragmenter is actually a term that is referred by Microsoft Windows. The basic purpose of designing the Disk Defragment was to increase access speed by rearranging the stored files on a disk, so that more storage location can be found. When disk defragment use to happen, then the head travel time use to reduce. This also reduces the time of reading and writing the files from the disk. Because of disk defragment the startup time of system also becomes shorter.
How Disk Defragment Work: As the name is telling us that disk defragment is the process which removes the fragmentations that use to occur on the hard disk. This fragmentation occurs with the storage and removal of files. To know about the process of fragmentation we first must have the knowledge about the working of hard disk. Hard disk use to save data in chunks, these chunks are known as sectors. Imagine a disk like CD, and then divide this CD into four parts. Each part of that CD can be called a sector for hard disk where data use to be stored. In one hard disk there use to multiple disks which use to store the data, hard disk use a small arm to move the head on the surface of those different disks. To write or read the data from the specific sector of disk the arm of the hard disk use to move to that disk and then waits for the sector to spin into position.
When you use to install a new application on the hard disk then that application would be stored in a sequence on the sectors. But when all the space on your hard disk fills up then you use to erase the data form from the hard disk. That removed data can be located on different sectors of your hard disk. It means that now you have empty space on various areas of disk. And when you would install another new application then that application would be stored on those different empty areas of the disk. So then when you try to open that application you hard disk arm have to move all over the sectors of hard disk drives to search for the required application. And this process use to take time because of which working speed of your system reduces.
When we run Disk Defragmenter on our system then it recognize all the files on the hard disk so that all the parts of same file can be realigned and stored in a sequential sector and disk. This realignment process decrease the amount of time that hard disk use to take in searching and opening a file. We can say that is very simple program which can boost the performance of your computer with just little effort.
Defragmenting Your Windows Hard Drive: In order to learn how defragment your hard disk, you have to follow some very simple steps.
- To defragment your hard drive in Windows, open My Computer and right-click on the C drive.
- Select Properties, and then click on the Tools tab and select Defragment Now.
- The Windows Disk Defragmenter program will open and all drives are listed in the top window pane. The C drive is where operating system files and programs are installed by default, so make sure that it is selected, and then click Defragment.
- Once the process is complete, the graphic should display most of the contiguous files on the left and the majority of the free space on the right. Close the Disk Defragmenter window and resume using your computer.
For a defragment to rum properly it is needed that no application would be running at that time. Because the purpose of defragment is to arrange all the applications on hard drive so it’s important that none of the application will work at that time, otherwise the application wont be able to move to new sector.
