How to trobleshoot WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network
The network operators find it more difficult to identify and deal with the network problems occurring in wireless systems. Wireless systems are considered more prone to security threats. For troubleshooting the wireless network it is important to have the basic knowledge about the hardware and software problems of wireless systems. The most common wireless technologies are WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, GSM, infrared and WLAN.
The Process of Wireless Troubleshooting
For the process of removing the problems associated with the wireless networks make a list of the network settings problems first. More or less the problems associated with wireless network is alike the problems associated with wired network. The wireless connectivity is always based on the physical network connection like cable modem or DSL. It is important to check the connectivity of the Ethernet ports and cables before proceeding to next step. Swap the damaged cables with a new one. Connect the router according to the manual’s prescription. Verify the reconfigure the network settings. Try to install the wireless network adapter properly. Analyze the settings of the wireless router. Also check the routers Log or Status page to check if proper IP address is assigned to the wireless client server. It is important for the network administrators and ISPs to check the TCP/IP settings of the client. For this process open the connection panel settings then mark and identify the relative wireless network. If the connected clients IP address does not match with the internet panel properties, reconfigure to get the automatic IP address. In order to verify the routers address of the user one can ping to allow the user to log in the network. It is also important that the router and the client are operating on the same 802.11 standard. Try to enable SSID on your router, make sure that you match the routers and clients SSID.
Tips for General Users
If you star a wireless LAN and there is a connectivity problem with your network. it is often advised to turn off all the physical devices and give a break of 30 to 60 seconds to the network and after that reattach this would help you to improve the wireless network. Verify the wireless adapter and its settings and also confirm if the light of the wireless adapter is on. If not it is important to detach the adapter and connect it again. Check if the wireless router is working properly and the connection of the wireless router with the cable DSL is proper. Also see if the firewall settings are disturbing your network settings. Repair the network settings and then connect the network. The encryption of the WEP and WAP is crucial to be handled properly. If you lose your encryption keys then you have to restore the router settings and rest the encryption keys again.
The Issue of Assessing WLAN Problems
The wireless LAN users are more subject to network risks as compared to the wired LAN. The operators of the wireless LAN are working in an environment which is changing constantly. Moreover the wireless users are mobile and they are using variable devices to access wireless signals. Therefore the trouble shooting of individual devices is also important. In case of WiFi hotspots it is difficult to measure the number of users who are accessing the current wireless access point. It is also considerable to see if the network problems are merely due to the fault in the network devices and settings or the sown time is created by the service providers as well. The network technicians are required to check the strength of the wireless signals in a particular WLAN.
