Introduction to IGRP
IGRP stands for the Interior Gateway Routing Protocol. It’s a protocol which was typically designed for the routing by Cisco Systems in 1980s. The main aim to develop IGRP to provide a rousting protocol to be used with the autonomous system structures.
IGRP Features
Distance Vector
IGRP is categorize as the distance vector protocol which is capable of sending all the sender router messages in portions called intervals to the receiver routers in the neighborhoods or interconnected .it has the ability to calculate the nodes and distance covered by the network.
Stability
Interior Gateway Protocol has built in features for enhancing the stability of the network such as split horizons, poison reverse update and holds downs. Holds down are typically used to protect the inappropriate route choice. When router is down, it can be detected easily by other router through down message update signals. After that new routes are calculated and triggered back again. This feature makes whole transmission smooth and stable because of uninterruptible message even in the case of path breakage
Historical Background
Before the official test of IGRP the main protocol in 1980s was the RIP Routing Information and was considered useful for the small and medium size routing internetworks, its hop count was restricted to 16 which mean that it is not flexible for the limit more than 16.when IGRP arrived I offered limit less routing capabilities and encouraged work places to switch the RIP with IGRP.
How IGRP Works
IGRP does not uses a signal array it make use of group of metrics complied in matching combinations .it’s on the network administrator that how he take routing decision and weighs the factors stated internetwork delays, reliability, load balancer and bandwidth availability. IGRP also contains default set of decisions. If administrator does not decide IGRP take routing decision automatically.in this way optimal route for message sensing can be determined.
IGRP offers wide range of metrics each with different built in capabilities. Values can be taken between 1 to 255 and reflecting bandwidth speed can be chosen from 1200 bps to 10 Giga bits .this weighting criteria ultimately enhance the performance.
After the route selection, IGRP supports the multiple routing dual bandwidth line can run the single traffic stream, this trend is pronounced as round robin fashion which can automatically switch itself to the second line in a single second .if the chosen lien goes down IGRP detects it through the update and switch to the other line .metric does not match at two paths can be used for different metrics. For instance path one is triple time better because the metrics is triple lower.it means the better path can be utilized three times for transmitting. But here it should be noted that only the routes with the best route can be efecti8ev for multiple paths. This makes overall network highly flexible.
Its entire working is flexible can be implemented in any networking environment. Cisco first implementation was fully supportive with internet protocol in any network after sometime Open systems interconnection connection less model was tested with CLNP protocol. In 1990s Cisco launched advanced version of the IGRP with the greater operating system efficiency .
Future Perception
IGRP is now a standard protocol for the robust routing; networking experts and network handler now prefer IGRP over any other transmission protocol for sending the message into chunks at other location. There was some critics’ on the speed but advanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol ha eliminated them. Field of networking is experiencing vast growth with increased use and improved networking technologies. It can be expected that Cisco may launch advanced IGRP series for dealing with advanced networks.
