Internet Connection Sharing - How to Share Internet Connection
Sharing Internet Connection
Internet sharing comes into mind whenever we think in terms of offices because they are equipped with a number of computers and laptops. You also need to share internet connection if you have more than one computer in your home. If you have a home network than you must be aware of the fact connecting machines that have DSL/cable modem to an Ethernet cable does not resolve the issue. The solution is a gateway. A junction that allows one to enter into a network or used as an exit to go out of the network is known as gateway. It routes data between different networks
In case your computer is on one network and all other computers are on some other network than what will you do to bypass information across the network. You will need a device that is attached to both networks and is able to decide whether the traffic can move into or out of a network and vice versa. If your network does not have a gateway then there is no way by which your systems can sent or receive information, where there will be no internet access.
Your internet service provider (ISP) has given you a default gateway for your small network that is directly attached to the DSL modem or cable. It allows the computer to connect to connect to the interenet but is not a part of our home network. It is a separate network that is established between a computer connected to a cable/DSL and an ISP.
To activate access to internet on your remaining small home networks, the system or device that is associated with the ISP behaves like a gateway for computers in local area. After configuration, it enables all systems in the home network to send and receive information by accessing internet.
Internet sharing can be established with almost any kind of connection, such as DSL modem, cable modem, ISDN, satellite, dial up and fixed wireless.
They usually fall into three big categories:
- Broadband Routers
- Software Based Solution
- Multi-IP Solutions
The type of internet sharing will be defined by the type of internet connection that is in use. You should explore the type of internet connection before sharing the internet between computers. It is observed that the speed of internet connection at shared computer systems decrease with the increasing number of systems as the bandwidth of the proxy is shared among the users. For example a 56000 baud modem is shared among eight people. There is only 7000 baud available per person. Various programs are available for this function. Wingate is the best program among them which acts as a server to the computer connected to the internet and as a client on all computers that want to connect to the internet. It is a shareware that means paid software.
To buy a DSL router or a cable is the easiest way to acquire gateway for your home network. The price is not an excuse to buy such gateways because there price has significantly decreased since the time of their first appearance in the market.
You can also have a hardware router for internet sharing and its advantage lies in the fact that the configuration is minimal as they are default gateways. Most of these devices incorporate firewall so the risk of security is less. They are more reliable than other gateways because they do not crash like computers.
Internet sharing allows us to make use of the single available internet connection on multiple devices. It can not only make the work cost effective but also precise.
