Regulation of nanotechnology
Regulation of the nanotechnology is needed because it has certain implication in the areas where it is extensively used. These implications make regulation essential to protect the world from harmful effects of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology deals with the smallest particles which makes it different then other technology and more risky. Scientists and researchers have conflicts in their thoughts and debate about nanotechnology regulation.
Reasons for regulation
Increasing use of nanotechnology is one of the major reasons because it labels almost every daily use product from socks to tennis balls. So commercial applications of nanotechnology must be regulated .Regulatory bodies such as food associations United States environmental protection agency has started handling nano particles. it has been argued that limited use of nanotechnology should be there so mankind and earth remains safe but on the other hand dedicated researchers pointed out the importance of nanotechnology in the progress of developing countries. Large environmental associations are making efforts for regulating the nanotechnology and making arrangements which are suitable for every environment
There is significant art about who will be responsible for the regulation of nanotechnology. While some non-nanotechnology regulatory agencies currently covers only some products and manufacturing process. It is required that country in which nanotech machines and devices are frequent in use must relate the products and processes by proper arrangements
Similarly the Australian FDA and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved the use of nanoparticles in sunscreens which would protect the human skin, body and other surfaces from penetration of nanoparticles but this Australian sunscreens caused a photocatalytic reaction that damaged the surface of newly installed pre-painted steel roofs in places where they came in contact with the sunscreen coated hands of workmen.
Nanomedicines have just started to enter drug regulatory processes, but within a few decades it would surely dominate the regulatory process world wide.doctors and researchers are making use drugs which contain nanoparticles but is less quantity in order to regulate the nanoparticles.Approved frameworks are also present which can be very helpful in reducing the side effects of nanoechnology.
Technical requirements for regulation
Some critical technical requirements and arrangements should be there for regulating the nanotechnogy ,the need of technical support makes regulation quite hard and different. Regulation of nanotechnology will require a definition of the size of its particles, in which every single particle and process is recognized as operating at the nano-scale. The size-defining characteristic of nanotechnology is the subject of important argument because its expensive and very sensitive task to measure the accurate size of extra nanoparticles. Another arrangement which is required is mass threshold this is basically a dealing with the toxic effects of chemicals and its reactions.In the field of chemistry it is hard to handle the mass threshold because its quite dangerous, any wrong mixture could destroy the whole research room so it should be done under high qualified agencies.
Leading governmental bodies of the world are seriously understanding the importance of nanotechnology and also forming specialized agencies for the sake of safety.in 2004 royal society of united kingdom was first to present the regulatory report in-front of the world,after that United States made efforts and formed the committee in 2008 in California which was named as (DTSC) Department of Toxic Substances Control.These two regulatory agencies are working hard for regulating nanotechnology,other countries such as Australia and Canada are also researching for preventing the toxic and fatal effects of nanoechnology. Regulation of nanotechnolgy machines and manufacturing plants is important issue because nanotechnolgy has become part of manufacturing process of daily use products. Awareness among the local people should also be created to understand the harmful affects of nanotechnology.
